Unit 2213
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: house fill
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: - mixture of building material and loose midden excavated from unit 2213.
- in SW corner, and SE corner, plastered surfaces (small, but continuing into unit 2216 to south) were left unexcavated.
- along plaster wall on E side of unit, a layer fo dirt (about 10 cm thick) was left in place, except on one 20 cm stretch (see sketch plan) where a probe was dug along the plaster to see its depth (bottom was not reached in this level)
- In fill left along E wall, pieces of bone (perhaps horn) were found (A on sketch plan), could they be part of a bucranium, since they are close to the wall plaster.
- in NW corner, a slanted surface of comparatively harder consistency seems to continue into unit to W.
- in SW corner, soil excavated had higher concentration of crumbly plaster, and patches of reddish soil.
20 VIII 97 After very careful brushing we could see various zones at the bottom of this unit: west half: concentric circles/arcs of burnt clay, black, red, grey around clear brick chunk fill. Wendy and Gavin suggest that this is roof fall. Building fill is south of this is midden/pit-fill. In the SW corner of the unit is an extension of burial pit (unit 2234/2235) dug into wider pit that is filled with hard gritty grey soil.

Unit description: This unit included lots of long bones, small bones and vertebrae of a frog or toad. They are probably intrusive - very clean, in good condition, and many of them complete. These have not been recorded here, but are in reference collection (labelled). LY 2001: Fairly small unit of backlog from 1997, the material dominated by sheep/goat although some cattle as well as a fragment of burnt antler are also present. Digested bone is fairly rare and burnt bone is present in low proportions. 2002 (NR): Sample 1 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded as flot frags only. No diagnostics, one fish. Moderate size sample, mostly sheep-size scrap, especially long bone shafts. Rather weathered, a little digestion and burning. Fragmentation is moderate; not a lot of tiny crumbles. Looks like the remains of daily consumption. Last number = 73Figurine Records: Yes
