Discussion: Skeleton 22195 is related to a selection of bones probably belonging to one individual: east-west oriented, they formed a compact amass that was lying on the bottom (-20 cm) of an oval surface (50x34 cm) defined by a stepped cut along the northern side of burial F3808.
Not all the bones could be identified during the excavation: a more accurate interpretation will be given by the human remains laboratory. Due to their proximity to the surface the bones were already highly damaged when we started to excavate them; in some cases the conservation was so bad that, after removing them from the soil, they disintegrate. It is possible that also other causes concurred to the terrible condition of the bones: a specific treatment of the human remains before their burial?
The upper level of the bones was formed by a femur, 2 undetermined long bones (south), some fragmented and undetermined bones, the lower part of the spinal column, the sacrum (centre). The position of the femur would not have been possible if individual was fully fleshed at the time of interment. Nonetheless some ligaments were probably still present and holding together the spinal column.
Under the southern femur was a tibia, which was partially superposed to the second femur (central). North from it were some other fragmented bones, a humerus and a shoulder (part of the subjacent pelvis was also visible at this point).
Under the tibia was the second femur (central) and north from it some other undetermined bones (probably still part of the bones removed above, but extremely fragmented and therefore difficult to distinguish from the upper ones) and probably a fibula (part of the subjacent ribs, as well as part of the pelvis were visible at this point).
Under the central femur were a humerus and a clavicle (south), some undetermined medium long bones (centre), other undetermined fragmented bones and some ribs (north).
Under this level of bones was another long medium bone and the right and lower part of the pelvis.
Over all the bones, a regular texture with white and thin parallel lines was clearly visible: related to a high concentration of phytholits, the pattern reminds of a texture or of a chord that could have been used to tightly wrap the bones together.
The absence of a skull into the bundle, the proximity of 22195 and the subjacent skull 22196, together with the short lapse of time between the two depositions, suggests that both groups of bones might belong to the same individual.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
