Unit 22269
Category: Layer dug in 2015
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: floor, plaster + makeup
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: dark grey clay; Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation); Basal Spit: unpainted
Description: This layer smelled like sulfure when I excavated it… is that possible? It was possible to smell it only when I was digging it (as there was some kind of reaction with the air), then it disapeared. I'm not sure how usefull this information is.
Is there a precedent ? Is it multisensorial archaeology or was I hallucinating ?
Discussion: 22269 is a plaster floor covering less a little bit less than half of sp 290 (eastern part). It was covered by make up / infill 22268 which has almost exactly the same extent. Plaster is grey (muddy). The most striking is the color of the make up (redish bown, almost orange) as it was composed of burnt constructional material (?). The same kind of orangy make up can be seen in sp 255 (walls) and sp 92 (floor). Can this suggest some sort of contemporaneity of constructions ?
The plaster of 22269 is abbuting the brick-like layer u22262 (f 1488), while the red makeup is going under it (cf. sketch for feature 1488), like the floor beneath (22282). 22269 was thus build probably at the same time than u22262 on top of u22282.
