Discussion: Unit is a course of 6 sandy-clay mud bricks bordering the w edges of platforms F 7410, F 7411, and bench F. 7415. Near the bench, the bricks sit underneath a similar clay and mudbrick (U. 22428, 22429) extension for the later phase of the bench F 3439. Near the main platform, the bricks are underneath a layer of chunky eroded plaster (U. 21775) which served as a kind of covering and extension of the main plaster floor at that level (U. 21774). Similarly, near F. 7410 the bricks are covered by U. 21784, another plastering event intended to cover the bricks and prepare for a later flooring event. The bricks are set into a layer of very fine, yellowish mortar U. 22417. The bricks are oriented with the long-sides parallel to the w edge of the platforms in a n-s line. The lines between the edges of the bricks and the mortar are very distinct and clear, and reflect quite a lot of time and attention invested into this architectural renovation. The function of this course seems to be functional is some sense, as it did extend the width of the features abutting wall F. 5014. It is unclear how long the bricks may have been exposed face up before they were plastered over, but it is also possible that the bricks served a symbolic purpose and fullfilled a specific " look" for the building that was desirable. It is clearly a unique constructional alteration to the eastern features, which was expertly carried out in terms of design. The fact that the extension connects the bench, main platform, and smaller platform (at the time when the painted hands were exposed) into a coheisve spatial and construction narrative suggests that the inhabitanats viewed the constructions of these elements as being intertwined with one another, and not as separate entities. The extension or architectural alteration of one feature directly involves and influences the maintenance of another.
