Unit 2250
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Platform,Room fill
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: This is gray fill that gives the impression of being near floor.
It is cut into by little pit (Unit 2242) plus is bounded on east by wall. Fallen bricks on top of it.
1998
This unit is grey fill and has some small pieces of mudbrick. Broken piece of an obsidian point has been found (X.1), clay animal figurine (X.2) and fragment of decorated (incrusted) leg fragment of miniature table model (X.3).
This unit is a mixture of grayish soft soil and darker midden deposit. The midden deposit becomes more charcoally and softer with patches of clay or mudbrick
22.07.98 N.Y.
The unit still continues to down. There are many animal bones and mud brick frags.
It is blackish/burnt midden deposits. After 2255 hard compact soil, 2250 spreads in the area

Two pieces of cattle scull and some big bones around have been found at the NE corner of the area, small pieces of a painted plaster have been found as well.
23.07.98 KCT
A collection of quite large animal bones was found in this unit. A number of scapulae (5) in apparently random jumbled positions, are present, along with a very crumbly Bos scull, an Ovis/Capra maxima (also very friable), and a few long bone shaft frags. On 23.07. the 3 Bos scull frags were partially removed- the upper, extraordinarily crumbly parts were removed, revealing lower, somewhat fresher + sturdier parts. Interestingly enough, no small bone frags. are apparent together with these very large pieces. The pieces are from Bos size animals with only 1 exception so far- the one, broken sheep/goat scull frag. The soil remains very darkly organic, with many charcoal bits, reddish patchs, and chunks of clay.
28.07. Some hard pieces of wall plaster and mud bricks were removed within this unit.
2/8/98 AMV
Midden deposits being removed in Northern-most part of this small room, seemingly endless. In the other areas of this unit where the bottom (?) of the midden was reached, it still has considerable charcoal/blackish inclusions, but is not the powdrey loosish charcoal as the midden layer was, it is now dominated by clay and plaster.
Samples 8 & 10 is soil along wall plaster on the S-wall in the SW corner of Building 3.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: This is a medium-large sized unit. There is a larger proportion of cattle-sized animals than is usually found; especially striking are the 4 scapulae, originally deposited in nearly complete state. One of the scapulae is from red deer, which is the first postcranial bone from this species we have found at the site. Also from cattle-sized animals are one fragmentary horn core, a posterior mandible fragment, some vertebrae and four molar teeth from the same maxilla. The sheep/goat-sized animals are represented by relatively few long bone shaft fragments, one burned scapula fragment, and some ribs. Many of the shafts show burning at high temperature, possibly while buried in ash. Microfauna include a scapula and other fragments, and there were fish jaws and vertebrae. Most of the fragmentation is modern, and the bones are very fragile. One Bos scapula shows determined pecking scars, presumably in an attempt to remove the spine. Two of the other scapulae show deliberate removal of the distal end at the neck. The scapulae do not seem to have been used as shovels/tools. One cattle-sized metatarsal appears to have been used as a chisel, based on chips on one edge. This material was associated with unusual botanical remains (fruit stones, nuts, cereals in large amounts) in an interior midden deposit, and may constitute the remains of a feast, possibly connected with the house going out of use. NR 2003: Samples 2, 7, 8, and 10 and a sample without number >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded as diagnostics and flot frags. The anonymous sample looks to consist mainly of the shattered remains of one or more sheep-size ribs, plus a little other sheep-size scrap. It is all rather soft and crumbly. Sample 2 is larger and better preserved, mostly small crumbles and fragments up to 2-3 cm of sheep-size scrap, with a very little large mammal. There is a little burning and digestion, with most of the bone looking rolled and worn. This looks like fill 'background noise'. Sample 7 is similar in size to sample 2, with some little crumbles but generally larger pieces. Most is sheep-size, but there is some large mammal. The surface condition is variable, and there is somewhat more burning and digestion. There is a bit of fish, microfauna, and one possible bird bone. This sample seems to have mixed origins. Sample 8 is fairly similar to sample 7, with more burning (ca. 40-50%) and somewhat more large mammal. It is also notable for a large amount of fish bone; a couple of these are burnt as well. Surface condition, while somewhat mixed, is generally good. This sample looks more like midden material. Sample 10 is similar to sample 2, although perhaps with slightly fresher average surface condition. It has one fish bone and a bird talon. Last Number = 207Figurine Records: Yes
