Unit 2256
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Arbitrary layer,Room fill
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: 1998
Last season left flat arbitrary layer in this unit. I attacked it in 3-5 cm spits digging through mostly moist bricky fill-from very clayey/silty lumps to sandy brick lumps. While these lumps seemed randomly distributed we discovered in the SE corner, up against feature 155, what seems to be a brick-mortar sequence probably plastered over (in situ ?); seems to complement the wall coming out of the north wall of unit 2261.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: X2 is a bone point. Moderate size unit, with larger fragment size than many in general and a few quite large chunks of large mammals. Roughly equal amounts of sheep-size and larger animals. Body parts tend to the long bones and ribs, with one cattle phalanx fragment the only foot bone. There is a sizable piece of a now-deteriorated cattle scapula; possibly quasi-complete at one time but not all here. There is also a sizable chunk of pig pelvis. A hedgehog jaw and a bit of antler contribute other taxa. Surface condition is somewhat variable, with most looking a bit matte and not very fresh, and many with a swampy patina. There is little burning and digestion. This looks like dirty, chunky fill (not too reworked) combined with some more primary post-consumption discard and possibly even a bit of feasting remains. One microfauna specimen was pulled, and also a mysterious object (not bone) that may be a strange kind of fossil or just possibly an artifact. We scanned this to pass around for identification. Sample 1 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded as flot frags only (no diagnostics). This is a moderate size sample, with a range of fragment sizes up to 5 cm. There is a little burning and some digestion. Long bones, ribs, and cranial material are all present. The surface condition is rather variable; at this level, or in this pocket, it looks like fill.
