Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: This is a small-medium unit, but from only 10 l. of dry-sieved, rather dense. it is moderately fragmented, with some big chunks. Mostly sheep-size with some large mammal, mostly in the form of cattle cranial, notably a hunk of muzzle (frontal + nasal) and a couple of bits of burnt horn core. Some perinatal sheep/goat. It is interesting that there are upper p2s from both sides of pretty surely the same animal, neonatal and rather delicate, and no other remains of this skull, although one mandible fragment might be from the same animal, as could some long bone shaft fragments. While large mammal is somewhat weighted toward the cranial, sheep-size body part distribution is fairly even; a bit short on the vertebrae and toes. Burning ca. 10%, with a range of intensities. Surface condition is generally good, looks rapidly buried. The articulated frontal and nasal shows that while the skull was broken up pretty thoroughly, the deposit was not disturbed much. Some digestion, not much gnawing; doesn't look particularly worked over by dogs. There is some coherence, with several bits that could come from the same sheep. Looks like a small amount of midden. Sample 1 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded completely. The sample is larger than the dry-sieved, and probably derives from more liters of soil. It has perhaps a slightly higher proportion of large mammal, including a fair bit of postcranial as well as some cranial and more burnt horn core. If all the burnt horn core from the unit was originally a singly piece (not clear), it would have been a goodly chunk, but only a small part of the horn. Otherwise the body part distribution seems pretty even, with relatively few long bones. There is a little fish and microfauna, and a bit of burnt mussel shell. There is probably a little more burning here than in the dry-sieved, and at least as much digestion. Fragmentation is similar, although of course there are lots of little crumbles in addition to the larger pieces. There is more of the perinatal sheep/goat, including the other scapula, some ribs and vertebrae, and long bone fragments. This is looking more like a whole animal, but it is not clear whether or not it was consumed. It might be worth checking surrounding units for more of it. It still looks like midden.
