Unit 2260

Category: layer    dug in 1998

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: midde + fill

Data Category Information: none

Discussion: At the end of excavation we realized that most of this unit belongs to the midden area same as unit 2228. Only a small part of the unit (to the west) belongs to the unit 2255 material (bricky, plaster fill). However both materials were collected together.

Midden material consists of bones, charcoal, burnt and unburnt brick/clay to the south of Feature 153 (grave). To the north and west it is bricky fill and plaster depositions with some charcoal.

We are combining units 2255 (bricky fill) with the same material in unit 2260 (western and northern part) and in the south and eastern part - where all of the samples (archive and flotation) were taken we are still in the midden area.

Unit description: 1050/1229: Tip of a bone point. {2003: Can't find any record of this in the BFD or Artifact tables, nor does it exist in the stored tools. A fragment like this seems unlikely to have gone to the museum. Is it possible it was all a mistake to begin with? I will skip F1 in case.} Although a flotation sample was taken and processed, we cannot find it. There is very little material from the dry screen, either: a piece of crumbled cattle horn core and a chunk of burnt large mammal rib. This certainly does not look like daily consumption, but there is too little to base much on, and clearly we lack the smaller range of pieces. Altogether not a very satisfactory unit, with much that seems to have been lost by us or others. Last number = 3
