Unit 2275
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: House fill
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: Unit 2275 is one half of black burnt deposits that were originally unit 2210. The reason this time I gave new unit number is that I want to try and divide burnt deposits from the rest of unit 2210 and have them floated separately. They seem to comprise almost pure organic (wood+) elements.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded

Unit description: F1 is a cattle DNA sample (sample 2) = BUT it is an equid maxillary tooth! (taken anyway). NR 2003: The rest of the unit is represented only by sample 1 flotation, >4mm 100% sorted, recorded completely. This is a biggish sample, with a lot of small bits but also some larger pieces. Most (80-90%) is burnt, and a sizable amount of the rest is digested. The unburnt material is small and scrappy, and seems mostly like 'background noise' sifting in from the fill. Most is sheep-size but there is some large mammal. There are bits from throughout the body except the feet, but nothing in any quantity except a big piece of sheep/goat scapula. There is a little bit of burnt cattle horn core, probably related to those found in 2210. There is also a piece of burnt antler tine and a small fragment of unburnt sheep/goat horn core. Most of the burning is heavy, thorough carbonization, although the antler has gone calcined brown (reducing atmosphere) on the outside. One small bit of fish and another of microfauna, both unburnt, are probably more of the background noise. Surface condition is generally fresh on the burnt bits, somewhat more worn on most of the unburnt. This is part of the deposit found amongst masses of burnt plant material. We only see a little slice of it here, but overall it is a puzzling deposit. It is not quite a normal feasting deposit, but has a lot of mostly sheep/goat bone minimally processed. Perhaps it is somehow related to the 'sheep feast' in space 85, although that should be earlier. Last number = 52Figurine Records: Yes
