Unit 23159
Category: Layer dug in 2017
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Fill of a pit
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: pit; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: Layer exposed after remove the remains of the U23145 the middle deposit in the pit U23147. So that unit belongs to the lower deposit documented in this pit made probably with the intention of remove the eastern wall of B-139.
After define the primary room infill in the southern part of the building, the eastern part was clearly more dark (see the ortophoto B139_2017_001_plan) but we thought that the pit was completely excavated and even the difference of coloration in the east, the surface exposed was the same layer, the primary room infill. With this idea, we decided to remove the rest of the room fills in the northern part of the building to expose the primary room infill in the entire space. As we describe before, all the deposits in the northern part of the building were removed with the arbitrary layer 23155.
When we exposed the primary room infill in the entire building, and we check the section ortophoto (B139_2017_001_section) we realize that the cut U23147 was deeper in the easter part of the building exactly in the area where the deposit was darker, so the pit was also cutting the primary room infill. So the darkest zone in the eastern part of the buildings correspond to the lower fill of the pit U23147 which as we said was truncating also the primary room infill too.
So to sum up, the U23159 refers to a light grey layer, pretty compact a bit grease and with quite a lot of clay and also charcoal in the composition that correspond the lowest fill in the pit U23147. After remove this layer, and in the edges of the deeper part of the pit, laying on the primary room infill we documented a few collapsed wall pieces. This elements supports the hypothesis that the pit was made with the intention of remove the eastern wall of the building. (28/06/17)
After remove the last remains of the U23159 we think that probably the F8704 (collapsed wall) correspond and event that happens before the cut was done, and the pit cuts also a bit the upper part of the collapsed wall. Is still in discussion the meaning of the pit U23147.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
