Unit 23256
Category: Cut dug in 2017
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Burial
Data Category Information: Description: pit
Description: This is the cut for Burial F.8455; see discussion in this feature.
Discussion: The cut for this burial was much searched and much debated by three experienced archaeologists: the human remains specialist Marco M., the field director Marek Baranski, and me. All excavators agree on the Eastern part of this cut, where thin layers of midden U.23227 can still be seen to have been interrupted by the cut for fill U.23255. Several attempts were made for the identification of a Southern and Western cut, within or as close as possible to the limits of the "3 x 4 m" trench plotted within space 620 (to reduce the extent of excavation into the midden, for the season goals to be achieved.). In my opinion this was not achieved convincingly and fill U.23255 can be seen to continue beyond the limits of the excavated pit. Also the same fill seems to exist still below skeleton U.23246. The Northern part of the cut seems to have been lost possibly because of us initially excavating with a pick-axe (into the midden prior to human remains starting emmerging), or because of truncation from above, or because it has not be reached. I propose that this cut is wider than the excavation pit for the particular area and its limits should be searched further in the West and the South. See also discussion for F.8455. The plan in ArcMap shows the excavation pit made for this burial to be revealed and lifted.
