Unit 23409
Category: Layer dug in 2017
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Fill of Bin / Basin
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: basin; Deposition: homogeneous
Description: U23409 was fill of Bin/Basin F7777, found in the West of space 576, in Building 52, against eastern Wall F7776, in about the middle of its length.
Discussion: The upper part of U23409 was more plastery and grey in the North, within Bin/Basin F7777, and light brown in the South, resembling to mudbrick collapse. The middle and lower part of southern U23409 included pieces of ochre and had an orange brown colour, while the northern part was also red-brown under the broken pieces of plaster. U23409 felt and looked more like collapse of a wall or structure from above rather than (floor) packing, although it must have been compacted and used as such later on for the packing of the floor above. Although in texture and general characteristics of composition U23409 looked similar within the entire length of Bin/Basin F7777 along Wall F7776, this slight difference in consistency and colour that was noticed between the southern and the northern part was later explained: at the bottom of F7777, near the northern end, a wavy rim constructed of lime-plaster divided the southern, larger, part of this Bin/Basin, from a smaller, ovoid in plan part, in the North. As the outer rim of F7777 in the West was partially destroyed in the North, while us not being able to recognise the possible function of this divided part within a Bin/Basin, and because of this noticed difference in the fill, a different feature number was given to this northern ovoid shaped part (F8501). See pictures and sketches for these two features. However, later on, during exc-season 2017, a smaller Basin/Bin (F8512) was revealed in space 94, which aslo had this characteristic wavy division in its northern part. In the case of F8512, the outer rim of the Basin/Bin had fully survived and it was easy to recognise that that northern ovoid part separated by a wavy rim of plaster, was not another feature, but part of the same feature, bin/basin. (See pictures and sketches of F8512 also). In retrospect, and by comparison of F8512 with F7777 and F8501, it is safe to suppose that F7777 and F8501 were the same feature, covered by the same fil, of slightly different consistencies, in the South from the North. However, it is difficult to explain the purpose of this oval division in the northern part of both features.
Consistency: Friable
Colour: Mixed parts of light grey, light brown, orange and white
Texture: Mixed sandy and clay pieces

Inclusions: 20% flecks of charcoal; 35% small pieces of aggregates; 10% small pieces of ochre in the South.
Post-depositional Features: Compaction from the fill and floor packing above. Square bench F7779 was built on top of the southern part of U23409.
Basal Boundary: Sharp, distinct, smooth, flat and even.
