Description: Pimary single inhumation of a neonate
Discussion: Primary burial of a premature baby. The baby is inhumated in a flexed position, the archaeothanatological analysis indicates that the baby was lying on a woven matting. The skeleton is constricted in the middle of the cut.
Age at death is approximately 34 weeks gestation (8.5 months), which is too young to be viable at birth. Minor skeletal pathology evident on the right tibia (enlarged and doubled nutrient foramen that has eroded the cortical surface) and on the post-sphenoid (posterior articular surface is irregular, pituitary fossa is normal). No other skeletal pathology is evident.
NB: small fragments of probable phytoliths were noticed underneath the thorax region, so we took a soil sample (S1). The sample contains tiny filaments and a light orange brown organic residue (to be examined by specialists).
