Discussion: Individual Sk. 23904 is a full-term fetus (40 weeks gestation) that died in utero. The adult female (Sk. 23799) died while pregnant and was buried with the pregnancy intact. Further analysis undertaken by the human remains lab revealed that the adult female suffered from considerable skeletal pathology including vertebral fusion and osteoporosis. The fetus does not display any evidence of skeletal pathology. The fetus is most likely female. The position of the fetal head (engaged in the mother's pelvis) and the nuchal position of the right hand (behind the head, elbow at chin) strongly suggest that if the mother was in labour, the baby could not have been delivered without intervention (manipulation of the trapped upper limb).
