Unit 23961
Category: Skeleton dug in 2017
Area: TPC
Interpretive Categories: infant skeleton
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: Infant skeleon placed in a cut (u. 23945) and infill (u. 23946). The cut truncated a NE corner of a platform (f. 8661) located in building 166, space 515. The skeleton was placed directly on an earlier yellowish platform (f.8670) in a flexed position. Initially thought that there were "Delicate ochra stains were found on the cranium and ribs", but after assessment in the HR lab and with XRF this could not be confirmed. Probably soil staining on the bones. The bones were in fairly good condition. Only the cranium was severly destroyed on its left side due to rodent activity. Also left hand was almost entirely missing.

Other comments: Initially thought that there was ochre staining on the cranium and the ribs. This checked by Eline S on 22/07/17 and didn't find any traces of ochre. Very likely misinterpretation of staining on the bone from the soil
Surface Modifications: rodent activity destroying left side of the cranium, plant roots
