Unit 2549
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: inter-building fill
Data Category Information: Location: between walls; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: Very mixed deposit c. 35 cm thick, mainly an orange sandy matrix with large fragments of brown clay, but also other inclusions such as charcoal fragments, grey mortar (esp. nearer base) & salts in general, the layer is more compact, with more building demolition type material nearer the base. It bears some comparison with the layers in space 73, but, not quite the same - there, the fill was more layered with 'cleaner' deposits while it is quite clearly mixed here. It does however, come down onto the same layer which is also the same as within building 1 - these may be a widespread levelling/terracing layer.
