Unit 2848
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: collapse
Data Category Information: In Situ: non in-situ; Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.35 m x 0.35 m, up to 15 mm thick
Discussion: Collapsed lining material. The same material as (2843) but lying horizontally. What was the original difference between this material and underlying (2851) possibly due to difference in temperature when oven in use, but appears to me , because of difference in consistency, that must have been a difference between these two layers originally? With (2848) and (2851) although apparently collapsed, ie no longer in situ structure, feel that may not have collapsed very far. The material, although broken up, fitted together well, no substantial gaps and no overlap of material.
Recognition: Layer previously identified in 1997 season by CC- no. as 2003. Recog. from plans and unit sheet and confirmed by CC.
Definition: Well defined, although edge planned on S side represents where layer visible within edge of oven structure and presumably continues.
Execution: Trowel, 1/2 sectioned initially.
Condition: Dry and sunny.
Consistency: loose
Colour: 10 YR 4/4 olive brown (when dry)
Texture: fine silt
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: n/a

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
