Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 3.4 x 0.43 x 0.25 m

Discussion: 2866 represents the bricks of wall 88 that were removed in 1998 for archive and flotation sampling. The material was homogeneous along the lenght of the wall, although heavily weathered on the upper course. The first two courses were removed before the remainders were given a separate unit number and any sieved in combination with the mortar of the wall. The turn of the wall to the west at the southern end was only evident for these upper courses and was undisturbed. This could have been carved into to build wall 75 to the west.

Recognition: Distinctive colour and texture in wall 88.

Definition: Separated by mortar from surrounding walls.

Execution: Trowel and mattock.

Condition: Dry and crumbly, hot and breezy.

Consistency: Firm.

Colour: 10 YR 6/3 Pale brown.

Texture: Sandy silt loam.

Bedding: Massive, very homogeneous.

Inclusions: 5% clay (small pieces) (10 YR 5/4 Yellowish brown); 2% charcoal (flecks); < 2% bone flecks.

Post-depositional Features: Salt crystalization and animal burrowing.

Basal Boundary: Sharp and clear constructional boundary. The bricks and mortar were clearly distinguishable ain wall 88. The surfaces between these were generally smooth and fairly level.
