Discussion: (2883) represents a sliver of "infill" between walls [61] and the upper two courses of [56]. Stratigraphically it must be later than these and seems to have been poured into the gap after the upper two courses of [56] were built against the eastern end of E-W running [61]. By this time, wall [61] seems to have slumped considerably to the west suggesting that it was quite a bit earlier than [56] and (2883) which was added to fill the gap between them. Other than its higher bone component, the material of (2883) was very similar to that of the mortar of [56] (2880). It may have been poured into place in the same episode of building as that of the upper two courses of [56] - i.e. the left-over mortar, thrown in to fill a gap with an adjacent building?

Recognition: Different colour and texture from wall [61] to the west. Similar to mortar of [56] to the east, but stratigrpahically it must have been later.

Definition: Clearly defined from surrounding material, marked by salt crystalisation

Execution: Trowel and pick

Condition: Dry and crumbly - late afternoon sun on a clammy day

Consistency: Firm

Colour: Pale brown 10 YR 6/3

Texture: Ashy sandy silt

Bedding: Massive

Inclusions: 5 % bone (some large pieces); 5% charcoal (flecks small and medium pieces); <2% obsidian; <2% plant silicates; 2% clay (10 YR 6/6

Post-depositional Features: Salt encrustation and animal burrowing

Basal Boundary: A clear, sharp basal boundary sitting above the bricks of [56] to the east and [61] to the west. The surface between these was smooth and fairly level and marked by salt crystalisation
