Unit 2923
Category: Layer dug in 1998
Area: Trench I
Interpretive Categories: building fill,midden
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: Probable extra-mural (?) dumps & midden deposits sloping down to S, and cut by large pit 2919 & other features. A compound layer consisting of two layers of relatively compact brown bricky fill (especially the upper was quite hard in consistency), seperated by a lens of ash and plant material. 2923 gives onto a similar ashy spread, which also contains a large patch of white plaster.
The recovery of Roman/Byz tile and painted plaster fom the top of 2923 suggests there may have been the base of a later feature here which was not picked up, but was clearly seperate from 2918/2919. Hence some contamination likely.
Recognition: clear, below fill of Mellart's trench
Definition: clear in vertical dimension
Execution: trowel
Condition: possible Roman/Byzantine contamination
Consistency: firm or friable
Colour: 10YR 4/2 (dk greyish brown) when moist with grey lenses
Texture: clayey silt
Bedding: compound layered
Inclusions: sparse frags of yellowish? mudbrick & white plaster (moderate size). Sparse small flecks of charcoal. Some areas with common small plant silicates/phytoliths (?chopped grass)
Post-depositional Features: see D
Basal Boundary: sharp, sloping down from N to S

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Flot sample 2 (1364), >4 mm, 100% sorted, only diagnostics. This is a medium-sized unit of generally very light brown bones. Between 1/3 and 1/2 of the assemblage are 03 long bone fragments. Vertebrae and ribs are fairly well represented. The identifiable limb bone ends are more fragmented than usual on the west mound, some of which is due to carnivore ravaging, but primarily seems to be heavier processing than in some of the other units. There are very few skull bones and quite a few foot bones. Apart from one large canid ulna and a cervid metacarpal all the bones are sheep/goat. The cervid is either a very robust Capreolus or a fallow deer - I will look at size ranges. All but 2 or 3 pieces of scrap are 03 size. The material appears to be highly processed post consumption material. The surface condition of the bones is uniformly good and suggests that the material has similar origin and history. The flot sample appears relatively dense with about 10% burning. There is only a small amount of digestion and a generally uniform condition. Edges are only slightly abraded.
