Unit 30005

Category: Layer    dug in 2015

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: Sequence of grey plaster floors and make-ups

Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: dark grey clay; Deposition: multiple; Basal Spit: unpainted

Discussion: Sequence of grey plaster floors (<0.5mm thickness each, more like finishing coats), and alluvial silty clay make-ups (1-0.3mm thickness each), in NE corner of building, immediately below the upper floor sequence U.30004.
A total of five floors and 6 make-up subunits have been excavated, all of them laying against the burial platform and definitely post-dating it.
Gypsum nodules of up to 2mm diameter are ubiquiteous all over the sequence, whereas plant impressions and articulated phytolith remains have been found on a few areas of certain floors, in addition to abundant micro and macroscopic charred wood fragments.
The sequence is limited by an alluvial clay packing towards the E, very compacted and preceding floor deposition. The unit lies on top of a thin grey plaster floor, extremely rich in charcoal, and the (clayish) levelling unit underneath it, that becomes thicker towards the E. It is very likely that these layers (floor and levelling material) continue under the burial platform, as seen in the remains of the platform plaster, which also lies on top of them.

Consistency: Firm.

Colour: Light grey (plasters) and light brown (make-ups of alluvial clay).

Texture: Fine silty clay.

Bedding: Layered.

Inclusions: Microcharcoal patches randomly distributed on grey floors. Dispersed articulated grass-like phytoliths on top of some floors in addition to plant impressions.

Post-depositional Features: NE corner severely bioturbated; abundant gypsum salts.

Basal Boundary: Sharp, prominent, smooth, constructional.
