Unit 30012
Category: Layer dug in 2015
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: 1st baked oven floor and make-up
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: baked; Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Discussion: First floor and make-up under oven superstructure, within the N wall F.3682. The blackened surface (floor) and greyish brown, slightly rubified make-up underneath have been excavated. The top was very scorched, and few charcoal remains have been found. Towards the back of the oven and orangish clay packing was placed, probably to mark the closure of this fire installation. This layer probably corresponds to the hearth layers of F.7345, although in this case they were probably truncated before the construction of the later N wall F.3681.
Consistency: Firm, but very crumbly
Colour: Very dark (blackish) brown
Texture: Silty clay
Bedding: Compound layered: floor (0.5cm) and make-up layer below (1.5cm)
Inclusions: Microcharcoal, especially abundant towards the top, 20% occurrence.
Post-depositional Features: Extremely bioturbated by rodent burrowing
Basal Boundary: Sharp, prominent, smooth to slightly irregular, constructional
