Unit 30102
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: platform surface and make-up
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: raised area (platform)
Discussion: This unit consists of multiple layers of plaster and make-up. The plaster surfaces removed are very fine and clean. The lower make-up consists of about a 1 to 2 cm thick fine sandly clay loam which has a large number of plant inclusions within it. In fact the plant remains are in good condition due to the partial carbonization caused by the fire in the building. More interestingly the floors above the make-up simply peel-off to imprints of fingers/hands caused by the laying of the make-up. The impressions suggest that the make-up was rather wet and padded down while quite malleable. The very clean edge of the platform suggests that there may have been a frame holding the make-up in place.
As excavation continued it became apparent that the lowest make-up layer actually folded onto the edge of the platform surface. A working shot of this was taken to record the phenomenon. This fold or lip may be evidence for the use of a plank to make a nice smooth edge on the platform.
Consistency: loose to moderately firm.
Colour: top plastered floors floors brown, mid make-up a darker brown, mid-level floors grayish brown, make-up with hand prints dark grayish brown
Texture: floors are a silty loam, make-up is a fine sandy clay loam
Bedding: compound layered
Inclusions: floors are relatively clean with minute specs of charcoal. Make-up has specs of charcoal, clay aggregates, and a lot of phytolith and plant impressions.
Post-depositional Features: salts and root / insect activity.
Basal Boundary: anthropogenic and sharp.
