Description: Deposit set within whole interior of Sp.490.

Discussion: Room-fill (u.30189) was recognized in 2012 within the whole interior of Sp.490, beneath the badly preserved patches of floor in B.108 (sp.84). Thickness (0,54m) of the described deposit actually constitute the space 490 as a stratigraphical category allowing to record the preparing/constructional phase of the B.108. In 2012 eastern segment of the unit (30189) was excavated mostly arbitrarily, due to uncertain relationships between particular features. At that time two excavation unit numbers (20449, 20455) were assigned to define succeeding sequences.
In 2014 the deposit was excavated in its N-W part next to the northern wall (F.3626) of B.108. Southern limit of the unit was established as an arbitrary line section (set alongside the anticipated prolongation of the S-face of wall F.3646). The accumulation of the material seems to be involved with the last preparation stage arranging the surface before building floors in sp.84. Regarding the latter assumption the deposit must be also considered in terms of packing accumulation or preparation layer. There may also have been a subtle combination of both. Already several pieces of evidence have been found to support the supposition. In particular, consistency and texture of the unit that indicate it was loaded to protect the lower part of the walls and keep them in the desired spot and position.
Within the fill there were two burials (F. 7330, 7331) found next to the southern face of the wall F.3626. In both cases there were no burial cuts. The latter may imply that the act of accumulation of the material had been carried out simultaneously with performing two funeral features. For this reason, the two burials might be considered as special foundation deposits. Also their location in the northern segment of the building is not an accidental one. It reminds of common funeral practices evidenced on site. In addition, there was a fragmentarily preserved platform (U.19457) uncovered in 2012, above the burial F.7330.
In the presented light, it would beinteresting to expand the relationship between described above burials with others (F.3644, F.3622) that were placed toward the SE direction, also within the preparation layer.
Taking into consideration the fact that several features were erected directly on the surface of the deposit (e.g. F.3635, 3637 and partition wall F.3636) that may imply the chosen material for loading was supposed to prevent sinking and slumping the heavy structures standing on it. The execution of the unit had been ceased on the level parallel with appearing on top of the wall (F.3646) which divides the excavation area in two separate recording places: (southern) Sp.489. and (northern) Sp. 488, both located in the lower sequence.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

X Finds Material: nothing recorded
