Unit 30314

Category: Layer    dug in 2013

Area: South

Interpretive Categories: Make-up layer

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous

Discussion: Identified by its grey-brown color and, where floor existed, by its position above this floor, the unit came down on a largely arbitrary boundary, with very minimal plaster floor being uncovered over the course of this unit's excavation.

Much of the soil in the western half of the building (see daily sketch from 15.07.13) came off in "cakes" about 2-3 cm in thickness. The SW corner of this western half had many bone inclusions while the central swath of the same western half had an unusually high frequency of charcoal inclusions.

Both in the SW and in the SE corner the unit came dow on brownish-orange patches. In the SE corner, we appear to have come down on a bin of sorts (see daily sketch from 14.07.13).

This unit (parts of it) may be near room fill, and the western half may have had part of this room fill excavated as part of this unit.

Consistency: Friable, but crumbles in western half

Colour: Grey-brown

Texture: Silty-clay

Bedding: Massive

Inclusions: Charcoal, shell, animal, bone

Post-depositional Features: Heavy weathering, plant roots

Basal Boundary: largely arbitrary
