Unit 3044
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: North
Data Category Information: Location: between walls; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: 1.67 N to S, 0.25 E to W, 0.36 m
Discussion: All the soil from this layer was given as a flotation sample as there seen to be lots of finds etc. here ( i.e. clay balls, fragments of obsidian etc.) This was marked not for density analysis.
Two pieces of wood were found at the bottom of this layer at its south east wend. They were photographed, and a dendrochronology sample was taken from branch one. Both branches were then put in separate bags.
Recognition: layer East of East wall, building one

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Small to medium sized deposit (part of deposit that extends to the unexcavated south). More large mammals than sheep-sized including cattle and equid. Most of the bone is burnt. Suspect burning occured post-depositionally. A number of consumption-like cuts on vertebrae and ribs. Fairly even body part distribution except no toes. Bone fragmented/fairly heavily processed although some fairly complete elements but generally in good condition. Little gnawing but no obvious digestion. No obvious articulation but some bones may be from the same animal. The assemblage is consistent with daily household consumption material that has been buried rapidly. A lack of rolled fragments (mainly fresh break fragments) implies rapid burial. Sample 2 4mm flot material 100% sorted, recorded completely. Small-medium amount. There are lots of fragments <1 cm and some up to 5 cm. All is burnt, either brown or black. Few diagnostics such as sheep-sized carpal, distal ulna. Also has fish jaw and bird bone (both removed for further identification). {Bird bone turns out to be small carnivore: F6. -NR 2001} Sheep-size scrap includes long bone frags, ribs, skull. Cow-size bone is indeterminate. Sample 3 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded completely. Moderate amount of material, nearly all burnt, mostly at low temperatures and probably reducing atmosphere. Mostly sheep-size, including a quite young sheep, with a few fragments of large mammal. A bit of fish and microfauna. Quite a bit of cranial, most of it from two sheep/goats (one quite young). Otherwise few diagnostics; some long bones, ribs, and vertebrae, but no feet below metapodials. Surfaces dull, bone somewhat friable from burning, but not weathered. No gnaw, little digestion. Fairly fragmented, but part of this results from trip through flotation tank. Some reasonably large pieces in the ground. Fairly coherent; much seems to be coming from two sheep/goats. Seems like reasonably primary post-consumption discard. Last number=146Figurine Records: Yes
