Unit 30501

Category: Layer    dug in 2013

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: the core of the bench

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: bench; Material: brick&mortar

Description: This unit may consist of two layers, representing 2 events: a more dense clay (tempered with less organic material) on the bottom and a more porous on the top. The uneven exposure to fire has made it more difficult to separate difference in materials.

Discussion: Unearthed in 2013, not excaveted due to the end of the season. Located in between plastered surfaces (U30529 and U20673) at the E end and N side and most of the S side but beyond that is very hard to distinguish it from surrounding construction rubble (from infill U20567). Multiple (at least 9) wild sheep horncores sticking out of it. Loose pieces of the horns were collected.

Addition to above ddiscussion after excavation in 2014 season:
This unit is the earliest stage of F7118 clearly distingusable from the overlaying layers by its colour and texture. Since it has been unevenly burnt it was very difficult to see possible layers within the unit, however, the position of the incorporated horns (x-find 1-10) in two rows (x-find 1,2 & 3, in an overlaying row) indicates that the core have been built in two stages. In addition one of the horns (x-find 10) have been covered in a later stage by a make-up layer (U21382). To investigate this, further samples were taken for analysis of the different (possibly) types of temper and clay (sample 3-5). This unit was excavated using trowel.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

X Finds Material: nothing recorded

Finds Material Stored: nothing recorded
