Unit 30842

Category: Layer    dug in 2013

Area: TPC

Interpretive Categories: hearth's base

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: hearth

Discussion: This hearth could be distinguished by the very compact burnt clay that forms this unit. The upper surface (crust) was a distinct dark blueish grey colour which was probably a result of considerable burning. The upper layer especially to the south- eastern part of the unit was very rich in phytoliths (2 samples were taken). This layer was up to 4 cm thick.

Beneath the surface the material was much lighter in colour, a mid orange brown and was also slightly less compact. This may indicates that the clay became gradually fired during its use. The material also peeled off very easily with a trowel. It was up to 2 cm thick.

Consistency: compact/ friable

Colour: dark blueish grey surface (crust) with mid orange brown underneath - brown more dominant

Texture: burnt silty clay

Bedding: layered (upper layer- compact solid, lower- make up?)

Inclusions: frequent phytoliths, occasional small rounded stones, moderately small flecks of charcoal, moderately small flecks of chalk

Post-depositional Features: none

Basal Boundary: uneven
