Discussion: We have been excavating half of the unit 31112 of feature 3356 (layer). This unit corresponds to the buttress F 3356 in building 107. It is composed of layers of mud bricks and layers of mortar. On the top of the unit there is also a layer of clair grey crumbly soft sediments with dark brown mortar clumps, mostly near the wall F3334. The unit was recognized because it was not a fill unit but a constructed unit with mud bricks and mortar layers. It is also different from the F 3355 (beneath F3356) because of the use of bricks and mortar in the construction of the buttress.

In order to make a flotation sample of the mortar only we gave it another unit number , U 31113

Important: The mudbricks have irregular slopes and are also different in size. The irregular surface of buttress F3355 gives the feeling that men built buttress F3356 without cleaning F3355 and by putting mud and mortar directly over buttress F3355 without making pre-formed mud bricks in the first place.

Consistency: crumbly soft on top, firm for the mudbricks and compact but crumbly for the mortar. Crumbly soft for the plaster inclusions

Colour: Clair grey for the mudbricks. On top little clumps of yellow clay and of black spots of charcoal in clair gray sediments. Dark-brown for the mortar. Some white plaster inclusions.

Texture: Silty clay

Bedding: Heterogeneous fill containing layers of mudbricks and layers of mortar. The layers are pretty straight. On top layer of crumbly soft clair grey sediments with dark brown mortar lumps.

Inclusions: Small spots of charcoal and of yellow clay quite frequents. Small fragments of bone, pottery sherds and little stones. A middle sized spot of phytoliths.

Post-depositional Features: 3 animal burrows

Basal Boundary: sloping
