Unit 31216
Category: Cluster dug in 2013
Area: Trench 5
Interpretive Categories: pottery cluster
Data Category Information: Location: building; Material: pottery; Basal Spit: ground stone fragments, bones
Discussion: The pottery cluster was originally recognized in situ by APV during the excavation of the NW nich of building 105. No separate cluster number was given at this stage; instead, the cluster was photographed as part of unit 31184. The upper layer of the cluster was subsequently disturbed during wall cleaning. The disturbance revealed two refitting pieces of ground stone (X13 and X14 u. 31184) that had not been discovered earlier but which should be considered part of the cluster. The disturbed pottery sherds were bagged separately but labeled as belonging to u. 31184.
More clustered sherds were uncovered when the NW niche fill was excavated as part of u. 31210. Underneath and around the sherds were think, but dense lenses of phytoliths, some of which also formed randomly patterned films of the undersites of pottery sherds.
This time the cluster was given a separate cluster number (31216) and photographed before and after the sherds were removed. The phytoliths were also sampled as part of the numbered cluster (S 1 u. 31216). All the sherds were bagged, with probable refitting clusters in separate bags.
The degree of, fragmentation is moderate, with several large, potentially refitting sherds found together. They may represent partly broken vessels that have been disposed of, together with fair amounts of plant material from which the phytoliths derive. The presence of single, non fitting sherds reinforces the interpretation of the cluster as a waste disposal assemblage. There was no clear sorting of the sherds by size or weight and thus it seems that the pottery was deposited directly where it was found in situ, rather than, having been swept into the corner. Photographs should be consulted for confirming this hypothesis.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
