Unit 31239
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: Trench 5
Interpretive Categories: midden,room fill
Data Category Information: none
Description: Soft greyish-brown sandy silt with a thin concentration of compact light grey mortar in the southern end
no inclusions, but occasional charcoal lenses (contained in the flotation sample S.1)
Discussion: 31239 was identified as a separate unit because it lies beneath U.31238, which was a thin plaster layer separating the two fills (31224 and 31239).
The fill material is similar to the lower half of U.31224. However, 31239 has more finds (particularly larger bone fragments) and charcoal, occasionally in thin lenses. Thus, 31239 seems more like midden material, perhaps used for backfilling a space before the plaster layer of U.31230 was laid.
Together, evidence from units 31184, 31210, 31221, 31224, 31238, and 31239 suggests distinct phases of infilling, floor building, and activities involving groundstones. Units below 31221 may belong to an earlier building than 105, as buttresses 3353 and 3365 never extend down into these depths.
