Discussion: Initially when started to expose (3139) thought that might be some kind of foundation to the oven, but quickly changed this and decided that probably an earlier floor to the oven because of its close resemblance to the oven floor (2865). Very hard surface, very similar colour. If this interpretation is correct though then only remnant and presumably truncated away on S side, possibly could insert a cut no. here between (3139) and (3130). Wendys micromorphological sample cut through this layer at the W end (micromorph.2859 unit number). Decided not to take any archmag. samples from this layer as at present fairly certain that this layer strat. higher than oven F.252, so will take archmag. samples from that floor.
Recognition: Layer recognised originally on excavation of (2870), light grey colour, hard surface resembling oven floor (2865).
