Discussion: A layer (U.32018) of silty-clay affected partially by high temperature, had been recorded below the whole area covered before by the oven (F.7854). Worth noticing is that its extent was bigger than identified before base (31570) of the mentioned fire installation. The layer had been exposed firstly after exploration of make-up U.32012 in central part of the mentioned oven. However, the full scope of the unit had been revealed after taking out the superstructure (31569) of later construction phase of the fire installation. The latter notion implies, that the activities related with keeping the fire, which distinctively effected on the deposit U.32018, must have been restricted by a bigger superstructure which did not survive and definitely not with U.31569.
Taking the collected data and on-field observations into account, the presented deposit U.32018 must be regarded as the only remains belonged to the earliest phase of use of the oven (7854) whose original construction and extent cannot be defined. The latter notion refers in particular to the fire proceedings that took place under bigger superstructure (than U.31569). As such, the unit 32018 probably played a role of make-up on top of whom a base was set. The base unfortunately had been also removed at some point of the exploitation of fire installation leaving only the layer (U.32018), on top of whom burned patches marked the deep penetration of the high temperature. The evoked above activities involving remove the base, remain unclear. However, during the demolition also domed-superstructure must have been destroyed. And afterwards smaller one (31569) had been built on top of the presented make-up (U.32018).
Intriguing is the fact that the re-enactment of the oven (marked by the setting superstructure U.31569) must have been preceded by an interval in employing the spot as the fire installation locale. The assessment is based on the evidence of partially preserved trampled activity surface (32023) that covered (smudged) North-Eastern part of the make-up layer (32018).

Consistency: friable

Colour: dark-brown - in upper part due to penetration of high tempoerature, mid-grey in lower part of the unit

Texture: silty-clay

Bedding: massive, however the burned (upper) part was crumbled.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

X Finds Material: nothing recorded
