Unit 32072
Category: Layer dug in 2017
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: base of the fire installation
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: baked; Deposition: multiple
Discussion: The unit 32072 had been assigned for the hard baked bases and the make-up of the fire installation F.8318, which was set in the Western, South-Western part of the sp. 531 beside the W-wall F.7346. The irregularly oval shape of the upper base implies some activities related with the use of the fire in atypical spot of the main room. The location corresponded in particular with the Northern part of the platform / threshold F.7880. Worth noticing is that the fire-installation did not have any restriction in a form of superstructure so it is difficult to precise the type of the feature. However, the extensive oval shaped base 32072 and the evidence of hard baking bears some resemblance with an oven. The feature was set in a shallow cut U.32722 which truncated the white plaster of the floor layer U.32713 coating the platform/threshold F.7880.
The unit 32072 refers to the two clay bases divided by the sandy-silt make-up. In order to speed up the excavation process and make it more efficient the decision had been made to group the 3 layers mentioned above and distinguish them only by the use of the flotation samples. Accordingly, the flotation sample (S2) had been collected exclusively from the upper base. Sample 3 (S3) represents the make-up. Sample 4 (S4) was collected from the partially preserved base recorded to the North. Sample 5 (S5) had been taken as an archive sample of the lower base.
Noteworthy is that the most upper (the latest) base of the fire installation (as well as the all others layers within the sequence) had been truncated after ceasing the use of the feature by the circular cut U.32772 whose purpose was to place the special deposit U.32720. The latter might be regarded as a cache F.8322 composed of the intentionally gathered obsidian flakes probably referred to the waste material of the flaking / knapping.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
