Unit 32114
Category: Layer dug in 2016
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: charcoal-rich dump
Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded
Discussion: This unit consists of a charcoal-rich, mixed dump. The context boundaries spread throughout most of space 610 (grids 1, 4-21) and thus varied in depth, as well as consistency due to differential trampling. The northern extent of the unit (grids 1, 4, and 7) was much more friable and ashy (due to more modern trampling) with less depth (3-10cm). The southern extent (grids 8-22) tended to be more substantial in depth (15-35cm) and were more compact, especially in the lower 5-10cm. The context consisted of compound layers with ash and charcoal lenses dispersed throughout. Some of the substantial lenses were sampled separately and sent to flotation. In grids where the depth of the unit exceeded 25cm, the context was sampled in spits (at every 10-15cm).
Though the unit is marked as priority, only grids 12 and 13 were prioritized.
Dry Sieve volume information by grid:
Grid 8- 2L (S3)
Grid 9- 63L (S13)
Grid 12- 159L (S23)
Grid 11- 75L (S33)
Grid 11- 55L (S38)
Grid 10- 90L (S43)
Grid 15- 120L (S53)
Grid 15- 130L (S57)
Grid 14- 210L (S73)
Grid 14- 198L (S77)
Grid 17- 350L (S103)
Grid 18-240L (S93)
Grid 16+19- 200L (S113)
Grid 16+19- 75L (S119)
Grid 7-83L (S133)
Grid 4-30L (S143)
Grid 20-110L (S123)
Grid 21- 120L (S(163)
Consistency: Loose to compact- context was more friable towards the north (grid # 1, 2, 4, 7)-potentially due to higher level of trampling. Towards the south (grid # 8-21) the unit was compact, especially in the lower 10cm
Colour: compound layers of light gray brown
Texture: silty clay
Bedding: compound and discontinuous layers throughout the unit
Inclusions: organic remains (seeds), plant remains (phytoliths), and geological (clay aggregates 5-10cm)
Post-depositional Features: animal burrows and insect activity; trampling in the northern part of the unit
Basal Boundary: anthropogenic and distinct

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
