Unit 32808
Category: Layer dug in 2017
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: flooring layer, patchy floor/make-up of external space
Data Category Information: Location: external; Material: dark grey clay; Basal Spit: unpainted
Discussion: Unit not excavated in 2017.
This unit recognized as a very thick and strong flooring event from SP.638 extending to the E of B.44. This unit was sealed by wallish/blocking feature 8668 which was primarily interpreted as some remnants of the eastern wall of B.44. Further investigation showed that F.8668 seemed to belong to B.10 and it’s more than possible that it’s one of the last remnants of foundation walls of that building.
U.32808 is clearly on the same level as surface of the SE platform of B.44 (F.1312) (for further details see heights of units: 8054 (platform plaster) & 11456 (make-up) excavated in 2004 and 2005 season.
Therefore is seems to be very possible that this flooring event is contemporaneous with some phase/phases of inhabitation of B.44. Excavators of B.44 made similar assumptions in 2005 when digging the earliest phase of inhabitation in that structure.
Roody Regan, Archive Report 2005, pp. 63
”Is is also now apparent that Building 44 continues to the east beyond the current edge of excavation, access probably gained by a disturbed crawl-hole in the south-east corner of the building.”
This very dense and strong floor was truncated to the E by cut U.32809. It was a large and possibly deep truncation made for the middens deposition (U.23998, U.23990) when the space went out use. U.32808 was sealing the very homogeneous layer of clay all over the surface.
