Unit 32818
Category: Skeleton dug in 2017
Area: TPC
Interpretive Categories: primary disturbed
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: This is an adult (sex to be identified in the lab) Neolithic individual, in primary disturbed inhumation.
Several features make this burial interesting:
1) The presence of red pigment on the frontal bone in the form of a straight, neat “stroke” of paint (small patches of pigment also present on the left maxilla)
2) The presence of a shell with red pigment at the level of the right shoulder (on top of it)
3) Fragments of animal bones apparently associated with the skeleton and positioned at the level of the cervical and abdominal regions.
4) The orientation of the inhumated, heading East (from the same context the preferential orientation is west-ward).
Altogether, these features make Sk. 32818 quite intriguing, pointing to possible social differentiation, and (maybe) elaborated treatment of the corpse before burial (the straightness of the pigment “line” on the frontal may suggest its application directly on bone - no fading due to decomposition liquids – however that the relative amount of soft tissue at the level of the frontal is limited and this must be considered as an alternative/complementary variable influencing the specific appearance of the frontal decoration
