Interpretive Categories: Mortar

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: mortar; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 0.99 x 0.32 x 0.191 m

Discussion: 3333 represents the mortar of wall 278. It was very similar to the brick material 3172 of the same wall, but had a charcoal content. It was clearly different from the 'infill' material which separated 278 from the walls around it.

Recognition: A softer, ashier material than that of wall 58 to the West and distinctly different to that of the brick of wall 278.

Definition: Defined by the difference of material.

Execution: Trowel and pick.

Condition: Dry at the top. moist further down.

Consistency: Firm.

Colour: 10YR 6/3 Pale brown.

Texture: Clayey sandy silt loam.

Bedding: Massive.

Inclusions: 8% charcoal (flecks and small pieces); 5% clay (flecks and small pieces); <2% plaster flecks.

Post-depositional Features: Salt encrustation and animal burrowing.

Basal Boundary: A sharp, clear constructional basal boundary. Where the wall had dived out, the mortar 3333 was closely bonded to the bricks of wall 278, further down it was distinguished more clearly by salt encrustation where the material was damper. The surface between these was smooth and level.
