Unit 3366
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Dump,Infill
Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: coarsely bedded (dumps)
Dimensions: ~1.8 m x ~3 m x ~5 cm
Discussion: This layer was dug in the Southern half by SM and the Northern half by LMH. The two halves were quite different in texture, colour and inclusions (see notes).
Represents a large dump of material as opposed to fine ash lenses in Space 115.
Recognition: Recognized under 3314 because of its blacker and greater amount of bone - more like a typical midden deposit than 3314. It is more obvious in the South half of the unit, as one moves North, espesially up the slope it becomes more difficult to distinguish from 3314. More difficult to recognize in the North half so mainly following the horizon rather than using characteristics to separate the layers.
Definition: Defined in the North by extent of excavation abutts midden section, to the East defined by adjacent excavation of Space 117 and wall 93, to South extant of excavation, to west it seems to fade out, abutts deposit containing cut for skeleton.
Execution: Trowel.
Condition: Very dry.
Consistency: Material is very mixed (southern end) and full of crumbly inclusions. Consistency is generally firm in both the southern and northern ends.
Colour: Colour is generally 2.5Y 7/2, 6/2, 7/1 Light grey to light brownish grey. 2.5Y 5/2 greyish brown when moist.
Texture: sticky when wet, gritty and silky to the touch - so clay loam / silty clay loam, Deeper down northern end - more clayey
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: Southern end - comparative to northern end, more coprilites, phytoliths and especially building debris, burnt brick and brick and chuunks of plaster, chunky inclusions - more bone and charcoal 30%. Northern end - charcoal ~5%, fragemtns of bone ~2-5%, some coprolite
Post-depositional Features: At north end, an animal hole runds for about 50 cm N-S, contained very soft material with bones.
Basal Boundary: S: bottom of layer not smooth / level, very irregular, up and down. Sloped down N->S and E->W. N end, distinctness - diffuse, dug by following horizon rather than notable characteristics. Layer came down upon coprolite and bone horizon all over. Contrast is faint and form wavy. The surface is uneven in the N but more wavy and uneven in the S

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
