In removing some bones we could not separate the orange layer from the black layer. They were sent together for flotation in those instances.

Unit description: A medium-small unit, coming from the >4mm flot residue sample 1. (This is the bone from around the scapularium, unit 2296). A small proportion of material is burnt, and all at low temperatures. Material is not very weathered (e.g. mostly stage 2). Of sheep-size, there are long bone shaft fragments, ribs, verts, skull fragments, plus two diagnostics - a malleolus and sesamoid. Of cattle-size, there is a long bone shaft fragment, a possible horn core fragment and undiagnostics. The bone is mostly small (1-2 cm), but a couple larger. Quite a bit of fish (including a large head bone), some amphibian (?) bones, and a bird? Fish bone from >4mm flot (2 grams) exported for identification purposes. NR 2003: Sample 8 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded as flot frags only (no diagnostics). This is a smallish sample, about half of it composed of little fragments of large mammal scapula. The rest is assorted little bits of large mammal and sheep-size scrap, many burnt, a few digested, most quite fresh. Looks like sweepings or rather primary remains of daily meals, perhaps sifted through a mat. There is a piece of amphibian microfauna and one of fish, both burnt.
