Discussion: Hearth surface - consisting of surface itself, light orange hard material, up to 0.03 m thick. Also included with this context is the friable dark brown material beneath the surface - which is presumably the heat affected infill material. 

Recognition: Recognised during excavation of (3778), distinctive hard surface, light orange colour. 

Definition: Clear, defined by baulk to W. 

Execution: Trowel. 

Condition: Dry. Surface; hard/cracked - slightly concave. 

Consistency: very hard/firm - friable 

Colour: 7.5 YR 5/4 brown surface (dry); 10 YR 3/2 very dark greyish brown (dry) 

Texture: sandy silt (ash component?) 

Bedding: layered 

Inclusions: occ.>2% charcoal flecks 

Post-depositional Features: n/a 

Basal Boundary: abrupt/distinct/smooth/steeply inclined - concave
