Unit 3830
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: brick
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.91 m x 0.38 m x 0.5-0.6 m
Discussion: Remaining bricks in S wall of building 1, space 154 (SW).
Upon examining niche F246 it became clear that some bricks/mortar which had been interpreted as the uppermost course of building 5 were in fact the lowest course of building 1 which must be in a foundation cut as they go behind the plaster of building 5. Pressure or time meant that they could not be fully investigated/excavated and in any case this would destabilise the building 5 wall plaster. The area above niche 246 was dug, leaving it would have been structurally unsound.
Recognition: Looks like a wall.
Definition: Defined by extent of brick/mortar.
Execution: Trowel, mattock.
