Unit 3873

Category: layer    dug in 1998

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: surface of platform

Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: raised area (platform); Material: white clay; Deposition: multiple

Dimensions: lenght 55 cm; width 35 cm; depth 1-0.5 cm

Discussion: Layers 1 and 2 in graphic 98-639.
First layer of floors from platform F239.

This layer was made up of multiple lenses of material, was very difficult to see differences in places (see graphic 98-639), there were many more lenses than could be seen in the section, some were less than 0.1 mm, so impossible to excavate separately. None of the lenses extended across the whole area of excavation and were very patchy. This may be as a result of the platform floors being walked over during the last two months of excavation. However, it was possible to see a rough sequence of lenses as follows:

Uppermost=
1) compacted dark surface (modern trample)
2) brown silty clay lens
3) pale brown silty clay lens
4) reddish brown lens, very patchy
5) plaster, extremely patchy <2 mm thick in places
6) dark 'greasy' clay lens
7) reddish brown lens, patchy
8) plaster lens, very patchy
9) dark 'greasy' clay, trample lens?
10) brown layer, reddish in places
11) plaster layer (2 very small) traces of red paint
12) dark 'greasy' trample layer, very fragmentary

= 12 layers/lenses.

Recognition: Floor of platform. Colour/texture changes.

Definition: Defined by limit of excavation.

Execution: Leaf trowel and patience.

Condition: Dry.

Consistency: compact but friable when crushed

Colour: varies; 10 YR 5/6 strong brown, also 10 YR 5/4 brown; plaster lenses 7.5 8/1 white; darker lenses 7.5 4/1 dark grey

Texture: mostly clayey silt; dark lenses greasy, ashy material; plaster silty ashy clay

Bedding: compound layered

Inclusions: none in upper lens, charcoal in other brownish layers

Post-depositional Features: very few roots, animal hole in SE part of excavated area

Basal Boundary: contrast prominent in places (ie between plaster and browner layers) others very hard to see, surfaces are pitted and wavy

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
