Unit 3875
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: floors
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: non-white laid floor; Deposition: composite (floor/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Dimensions: 10 mm thick x 0.5 m N-S x 0.3 m W-E excavated
Discussion: Note stratigraphically this layer was dug out of sequence as it lies below FI242, and possibly other layers as well, which could not be excavated.
This was the uppermost unit of a small square of layers excavated in the S part of space 154 near to FI242. For practical reasons c.6 layers were excavated as one. These were a series of thin discontinuous layers which represent floor/trample/oven rake-out.
Recognition: Vertically different colour/texture, horizontally arbitrary edges.
Definition: Arbitrary.
Execution: Partially excavated by trowel.
Condition: Normal.
Consistency: soft
Colour: varied as this is a number of deposits; includes 5 Y 5/6 yellow, 7.5 YR 7/1 light grey, 10 YR 5/3 brown
Texture: varied, clay dominates
Bedding: compound layered
Inclusions: occasional charcoal flecks, small bone frags, small stones, plant impressions, oven lining frags; all 2%
Post-depositional Features: human trampling, bioturbation, truncation
Basal Boundary: anthropogenic/distinct/smooth/flat

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
