Unit 4225
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: infill between walls
Data Category Information: Location: between walls; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 2.8m n-s x c.0.10m wide x 1.46m deep
Discussion: Infill between walls 415 to east and wall 425 to west on N-S alignment. Initially believed to represent slow accumulation of similar material between the buildings + similar to fill (4261) to south and on excavation the fill appeared to be consistent throughout supported by the consistent finds throughout also. So now it appears that the fill was deliberately deposited in a single event. We should see what Sheelagh says.
The anomaly is that it differs so much from to infill (4261) + not constructed at the same time although both level VII. Dry Sieve Information: Probably some dry sieve but amount unknown
Recognition: location between 2 walls
Definition: seen in plan + section post removal of 415
Execution: in section, with trowel from interface with western wall 425
Condition: dry + heavily disturbed by root + animal activity
Consistency: moderately compact
Colour: mid grey brown
Texture: fine sandy silt (20:80)
Bedding: massive - no discernible bedding although deposition process must result in diffuse compound layers. During excavation noted that the infill was consistent throughout + the large cattle bone frags + large clay ball frags were present throughout
Inclusions: <1% large cattle bone; <% clayball; 1% small - med charcoal frags + flecks; 10% slat carbonates; 2% clay or mudbrick frags; 2% phytoliths, <% baked oven structure frags
Post-depositional Features: natural crcaking + disturbed by animal + root
Basal Boundary: irregular, natural infilling of void. The basal boundary turned out to be clear, anthropogenic + slightly irregular

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Infill between two exterior walls. A very unusual deposit containing a number of large bone pieces of a few animals including one complete Bos horn core. Skull and scapula bones predominate. Colour ranges from light brown to black, but with a higher percentage of darkly stained bones than usual. There was a small amount of burning, especially on the vertebrae and teeth. Elements are primarily humerus, scapula and skull with some vertebrae and ribs and one ulna. Taxa are Bos (possibly aurochs as well as cattle), sheep/goat and a few medium-sized mammal bones that could not be identified to species. The Bos bones are much less fragmented than usual. There is also one fish bone and two pieces for the microfaunist. The unit contains the distal portion of 5 separate humeri from at least four different Bos, two of which are extremely large. It also has two almost full length Bos scapulae from different individuals. Almost all of the very small pieces (under 2 cm) have modern breaks - the prehistoric fill sems to have been very clean and contained bones from a limited number of individuals and a limited selection of elements. Addendum: Analysis of the 4mm heavy residue fraction, despite the small size, produced a much wider range of elements and a much higher percentage of the medium-sized taxa suggesting that there was significant data recovery error in the rest of the sample. The fill was not as clean as initially thought and was more midden-like. There are no darkly stained bones in the 4mm fraction and a very tiny percentage of burnt bone. However, the large number of relatively large pieces of Bos humeri and scapulae is still unusual. Last Number = F.135Figurine Records: No Ground Stone Records: Yes
