Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick&mortar; Deposition: heterogeneous

Description: VIII or IX

Discussion: - material used in construction of wall 406 readily distinguished from (4238) - however not able to identify whether this unit is brick or mortar. - In fact looking at the courses in the wall appears as if there is no definite brick and mortar - but just the alternating material. In some places (4237) appears to be forming bricks and elsewhere (4238). Where we drew section 99/108 though after partial excavation of the wall appeared that here at least (4237) was forming the bricks.

Recognition: Recognised by colour and texture contrast to 4238.

Definition: Defined by boundary with 4238.

Execution: Sampled by excavating along horizons between unit and 4238-trowel/small pick

Condition: damp

Consistency: friable to compact

Colour: pale brown

Texture: sandy silt also with small clay fraction <10%

Bedding: massive

Inclusions: v.occ.charcoal flecks <25

Post-depositional Features: salt flecks

Basal Boundary: constructional/very sharp/prominent/smooth - flat but courses dipping down from east to west towards western end of the wall.
