Unit 4276
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: backfill,rakeout
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: irreg. c1.8m N - S by 1.3m E - W. Max depth 50mm minimum 10mm
Discussion: Deposit of compacted mixed material, recognised by slightly higher content of chargoal against a background of more building debris material.
Possible remnants of ash rakeout or the very latest deposit of infill of underlying building and therefore levelling deposit too.
Three obsidian rough-cuts were found at the interface of this and the underlying deposit which should have been allocated a chache number... but we forgot. Doh! The obsidian (X1,2,3) was grouped together and possibly in a container long disintegrated.
Recognition: concentration of charcoal-rich deposit against less charcoal layer - presence of obsidian alerted change of event
Definition: not clear all round, good edge to west and south, elsewhere diffuse, deposit merges into surrounding deposit
Execution: trowel, from good edge towards centre - excavated in plan
Condition: slightly damp
Consistency: moderately compact
Colour: mid - dark gray brown
Texture: clayey silt
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: 20% flecks of small frag. charcoal, 10% flecks salt, 10% flecks phytoliths; 5% areas of organic deposits (coprololites?)
Post-depositional Features: natural - disturbed by roots, human, possibly truncated or levelled
Basal Boundary: diffuse, layer shared some characteristics with underlying deposit, although fell was slightly more clayey. Basal boudary also uneven.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded

Unit description: Flot sample 2457 No dry sieve material. The entire 4mm heavy residue was sorted and recorded. Fragment size is small as expected in a lense, colour ranges from mid brown to black, but is fairly uniform dark brown on average. Only a small percentage of the bones are burnt and they are all the smallest pieces. There are a few bones belonging to a small carnivore and a badger pelvis but most bones larger than 1 cm appear to be from a sheep sized animal .
