Unit 4460
Category: Cluster dug in 1999
Area: South
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: burial; Material: wood; Deposition: secondary deposition
Dimensions: 0.75m (E-W) by 0.33m (N-S) by 0.02m thick
Discussion: Large, thin sheet of part mineralised, part carbonised wood in burial F.492, overlying crouched skeleton, possibly placed as a burial cover though only part of the skeleton is covered. It maybe placed to protect the sketon when the burial was re-excavated to remove the head. It is possibly even symbolic (the wood was later identified as hackberry which is very hard).
Recognition: Clear charred wooden block below upper grave fill
Definition: Clearly defined block with clear edges
Execution: Small conservation tools from edges
Condition: Dry and very friable
Consistency: Very friable
Colour: Black where charcoal, mottled white and grey where preserved salt replacement
Texture: charcoal and mineral clay
