Discussion: Layer of ashy material lying directly over the burnt base of fire installation feature F523 and spreading a little away from the feature. Probably therefore rake-out relating directly to the use of F523. 

 

Recognition: Ashy spread in the entrance of F523 

Definition: Very clear, overlying paler deposits 

Execution: Trowel from edges 

Condition: Firm and slightly moist 

Consistency: Firm 

Colour: Mottled grey and black 

Texture: Silty clay 

Bedding: Layered 

Inclusions: >20% charcoal flecks 

Post-depositional Features: Some root and insect disturbance 

Basal Boundary: Clear, smooth, anthropic

Unit description: Flot sample 2847 The rakeout associated with oven F.523 in space 173. There is a tiny amount of material in this unit, none of which is identifiable to unit. About 1/3 is burnt, 1/3 is weathered and 1/3 is unweathered. The unweathered bone is all recently fragmented and may have been part of a single larger fragment.
