Unit description: A fairly small amount of bone was recovered from unit 4842 and mostly was undiagnostic fragments of sheep-sized long bones. Larger mammal long bones shaft fragments were also present but in much smaller numbers. Rib, vertebral and skull pieces from 03 size animals formed almost the rest of the context and the only diagnostic bone was limited to a few carpals and phalanx fragments. Approximately 30% of the bone had been burnt at low temperatures and was mainly the smaller fragments. Digested bone was present but in low proportions and tended to be confined to the fraction of the bone that had not been burnt. Weathering was minimal but fragmentation was high, apart from one piece of 13 cm, the bone was all under 6 cm in length. Even with the highly processed bone from other units, there tends to be a greater proportion of larger bone fragments. This suggests that the material could represent bone that escaped cleaning efforts and the burning indicates the possibility that the material was swept into a hearth. 4mm flotation sample #2 and #3 were recorded for diagnostics only. Both were similar in makeup to the dry sieve material.Figurine Records: Yes
